Jamaica's Ackera Nugent blazed to a world-leading time of 12.24 seconds in the 100m hurdles at the Rome Diamond League meet on Friday, shattering both her Jamaican national record and the meet record she set in late June at the national championships in Kingston.
Nugent powered through a –0.4 headwind to secure victory, edging out Olympic champion Masai Russell, who clocked 12.31, and the Netherlands' Nadine Visser, who finished in 12.52.
“This victory is not about revenge for the Olympics,” stated Nugent. “I’m just in really good shape. I was injured before, and this is a new experience for me. I am still so young, and I still have to show up.”
“I kind of expected to win here. I really enjoyed this race. For the next races, I do not promise anything because it will depend on the day and the weather as well.”
"Everyone's process is different, and I’m grateful for mine. I’m in no rush—22 years old with 15 more years to go," she later expressed on her Instagram.
