Dancehall’s global appeal is undeniable, but many still frown upon foreign artists exploring the Jamaican genre.
S Pri, an Austrian dancehall artist currently based in London, is stepping back into the scene after a four-year hiatus with his new single, “Back at It,” aiming to reclaim his space and make his mark.
“‘Back at It’ is raw, original dancehall — both in beat and lyrics,” S Pri shared. “That’s what I try to represent: authentic dancehall. This time, it comes with a harsher message than usual — ‘f*cker dem vex and chatt baga shhhh.’ I’m back with a rougher tone that’s bound to offend some of them, so let’s give them something to talk and cuss about.”
Speaking on the lack of support from some within the Jamaican community, he said, “Despite all the challenges and obstacles, being on the verge of giving up many times — I simply can’t. I’m 90 to 99% music. If I give it up, I give up myself.” He continued, “It’s the genuine love and passion for this music and culture that keeps me going.”
He added, “Knowing that the mere idea of me doing what I’m doing is always grounds for controversy and might offend some people, I’ve learned to accept it — and even started to lean into it. ‘Who waah vex, gwaan vex.’”

With Europe’s dancehall and reggae scene coming alive — thanks to major festivals from the UK to Germany, Holland, and even Malta — the question remains: is the world ready to embrace more foreigners in the genre? S Pri is ready to find out. “If you have a dream and the right work ethic, you have to push through — against all odds,” he concluded.
