Beyond the Mic: Jamaica's Vybz Minister Fyahman Becoming Star MC

Interview: Fyahman reflects on his journey from campus host to shining star in the local scene, Romeich influence, and building his own brand

One of the most sought-after MCs in Jamaica, Fyahman's ascent to prominence seemed to happen overnight. Known for his natural charisma, exuberance, and bravado, his name echoes in social spaces around Jamaica.  Amidst a sea of talent, he shines with a golden aura, a testament to his unique ability to connect with and mesmerize his listeners. A true Vybz Minister.

Fabian Morris, aka Fyahman, never intended to become a DJ. He initially focused on hosting forums and functions at the University of West Indies, inspired by figures like Terri-Karelle, Miss Kitty, and Badda Bling. His talent became evident through constant encouragement at university events. "Several DJ's would've told me this is something you can actually do. I remember vividly at an event DJ Mac and Baba were playing and they told me the same thing, and that was where it started", he said.

When asked about who he looked up to when starting out, Fyahman said, “At the time, it would definitely be Brush1, because we share many similar characteristics in terms of energy, passion, and delivery. Just a creativity when it comes to specializing in the art. I also looked up to DJ Insaneo of Jugglin Masters, and I was part of them for a while as well. They were instrumental in taking me off campus."

"When I was with Jugglin Masters, Laing D asked Insaneo to MC at Night Carnival in April-May 2022. IInsaneo declined the booking and told them to let me do it. I remember wrapping a Jamaican rag around my head and taking the stage at 11 pm. That was the starting point of the rise of my career, and I never looked back", Fabian reflected.

Balancing law school and being on the road was a struggle, but it taught him time management. "You have to acclimate yourself to the culture if you want to put yourself out there and be different from the rest", he said.

As an MC, he is known for witty comments and engaging the crowd, making them laugh and enjoy the moment. "People love a good laugh, and most times it's just in the moment. It's really about entertaining at its finest. People have spent their money and time to escape the pressures of life for a few hours," Fyahman explained.

He continued, "I radiate the crowd with my energy, ensuring people are comfortable. Often, they already know what to expect. Like at Mayhem recently, everyone was ready to have fun. My duty is to learn how to read people and crowds daily. When you understand how to read crowds properly, you can assimilate the energy they give off."

With his role as an MC, Fyahman collaborates with a lot of DJ’s. When asked about the collaboration process he said, "We don’t plan sets. Sometimes we don’t know what we’re going to play right until the last song of the DJ before us played. What we have to do is be well versed in music overall to say that, based on the set that precedes us, this is where we’re going to go in terms of the juggling."

Fyahman,s journey has had him working with a variety of entities; first acknowledging Jugglin Masters for his big break, then being around the Chromatic crew which he said aided in the growth of his platform/brand and also still works with to this day.

"I radiate the crowd with my energy, ensuring people are comfortable. My duty is to learn how to read people and crowds daily. When you understand how to read crowds properly, you can assimilate the energy they give off."

However, Currently with Romeich Entertainment, Fyahman praises them for helping him grow his brand and connect with corporate entities like Guinness, Digicel, and Smirnoff. He also excels as a host and producer for the renowned Fyah 105 radio station.

"I started as a relief host, filling in for Brush 1, who left the station earlier this year. I then took over as host and producer of the Scorch Show, a young, hip, and vibrant program,", Fyahman explained. "It's been great leveraging corporate connections and expressing myself and my views, all while having Nova play good music."

With so many different events over his short career, Fyahman reflects, "I have to say I Love Soca, the energy is always right and it leaves a lasting impression. That's where I’d also build my tailored 'Fyah Suits' to perform in."

"Another favorite is the Fete Republic team’s Night Carnival, an event I always look forward to. Recently, Mayhem has also stood out; as a water party, it always has extreme twists. Finally, the Prime Minister’s Youth Awards is special to me. I’ve played there twice, and I can literally play anything, which is really nice."

Venturing outside the realm of an MC and the thrill of the Jamaican nightlife, Fyahman also coaches for TVJ’s Schools’ Challenge Quiz. "This year, I started to post and talk at length about coaching Schools’ Challenge Quiz. Quiz has revolutionized my life. I've been playing since I was at Naggo’s Head Primary School and then went to Jamaica College. I coach for Manchester High and assist at Jamaica College as well."

He continued, "Quiz is my way of giving back to Jamaica’s development. It’s an academic competition, but there’s much more to it than attaining knowledge. You have to embody determination, discipline, and calm under pressure. These qualities are essential for a school to advance in the competition, as everyone is studying the same information. It's a joy watching all of this unfold."

Another side of him that people may not know is his involvement in empowerment speaking engagements for graduations, information sessions, and more. He aims to use his voice and stories of triumph to motivate others to effect change in their lives.

Regarding new ventures, Fyahman said, "It has already started through event curation. I started ‘Soak’d’, which began as a birthday celebration and now it’s a standalone brand, branded as the ultimate water party. We started it in September last year, and the second staging was held at Sabina Park with Yardmas Carnival, attracting over 2000 attendees. I’ve also worked with Scream, one of the most sought-after Halloween parties on campus, partnering with Hours Entertainment. Additionally, I've been working with Fanatic for over a year now."

"These brands allow me to express myself, and I love curating experiences for people. Soak’d is coming back this September at UWI, Scream returns in November, Fanatic is at the end of June, and there's a lot more to come", he shared enthusiastically.

Aiming to enter the production business someday, Fyahman confirms that he will continue to relentlessly build his brand as Minister Vybz, with many upcoming events that he will curate and present this year.
