Vybz Kartel's return to public life after 13 years in prison is causing a buzz in Jamaica, echoing the excitement that surrounded Buju Banton’s release. Following time spent abroad for vacation, medical, and business matters in St. Vincent and Panama, Kartel is back on the island and preparing for his highly anticipated event. His major comeback, 'Freedom Street,' is set for New Year's Eve at the National Stadium and will be his first performance since his release from prison.
Much like Buju Banton’s post-release activities, Kartel's comeback is making headlines. After Banton's release from McRae Correctional Institution on December 7, 2018, he made his first public appearance at Stone Love Sound’s anniversary event later that month. However, his major comeback came with 'The Long Walk to Freedom' concert at the National Stadium in March 2019, which drew over 30,000 attendees.
Kartel’s comeback journey also began with major moves. Before his Caribbean trip, he had signed a deal for his upcoming concert with Downsound Entertainment CEO Joe Bogdanovitch and Skatta Burrell. Upon his return, Kartel hit the studio and released his first single since prison, 'The Comet,' which quickly surged to #1 on YouTube's Trending charts in Jamaica, amassing 1.8 million views in just three days.
In the past 24 hours, Kartel has been busy. He made a notable appearance at the People’s National Party’s 86th annual conference at the National Arena in St. Andrew, accompanied by his attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan and Chief Richard Currie, leader of the Accompong Maroons. He also appeared as a guest judge on Digicel’s Rising Stars and made an iconic appearance at the popular Sunday night event, Dolly Sundays, at The Meca Club in Kingston.
With three months to go until 'Freedom Street' concert, it looks like Vybz Kartel's return to the public eye will make plenty of headlines.
