Reggae Boyz winger Leon Bailey and England international Raheem Sterling, both Jamaican-born footballers, have built impressive careers in the English Premier League, though their journeys have taken different paths. Despite this, the two have remained close friends over the years, often sharing memorable moments together while proudly representing their Caribbean roots.
One iconic example came during the pandemic, when the pair hosted a playful live musical clash, spinning dancehall tracks and showing off their deep knowledge of Jamaican music and culture.
In an interview with Trade Nation, Leon Bailey offered insights into his career and spoke warmly about his longtime friend and fellow footballer, Raheem Sterling. "I’ve known Raheem since the age of 16 and he was at Liverpool at the time," Bailey shared.
Bailey went on to explain why he chose to wear the same jersey number as Sterling in his career. "I looked up to him as a Jamaican that was playing at the highest level and was so young as well. He is an inspiration to me. When I signed my first contract, I thought what better number than to take 31. I talked to him, and he was very supportive of me before I became a professional."
Speaking about the advice Sterling has given him over the years, the 27-year-old winger reflected: "He’s like a big brother to me; we’re very close and talk all the time," Bailey said. "We’re always in Jamaica together, and even in England, we link up sometimes. He’s constantly giving me advice—not just about football, but about life in general."
With the recent launch of his Leon Bailey Wellness Lounge at Bellevue Hospital in Kingston, Bailey continues to show how important it is for him to give back to the community. In the interview, he explained how fans can catch his attention for a chance to receive his jersey. "I like making little ones happy, the less fortunate ones and anybody in general. If I see somebody who looks like they really want my shirt then I will give it to them. They don’t need to have a sign or anything. I’ll do it regardless", he noted.
