Former Manchester United prospect Mason Greenwood has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Jamaica. This decision follows a period of uncertainty in his international career, particularly after his legal issues and subsequent absence from the England squad. Greenwood, who has represented England at youth levels and earned a single senior cap, will now represent Jamaica, taking advantage of his Jamaican heritage.

Steve McClaren, the new head coach of Jamaica's national team, played a crucial role in Greenwood's decision. McClaren, who coached Greenwood at Manchester United, significantly influenced the forward's switch. This move is expected to strengthen Jamaica's squad as they gear up for international competitions, including the CONCACAF Nations League and the 2024 Copa America.

The English Football Association (FA) has already approved Jamaica's request to transfer Greenwood's international registration, making his debut for Jamaica imminent.

Greenwood, once a highly-rated Manchester United player, faced serious legal issues in 2022, including allegations of attempted rape and assault of his former girlfriend, which led to his suspension from the team. The charges were dropped in 2023, but his reputation was damaged, resulting in his departure from Manchester United by mutual agreement later that year. He then joined Getafe on loan.

In the summer of 2024, He signed a five-year contract with French side Marseille in a deal worth up to €31.6 million. However, the move was controversial, with the mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan, publicly criticizing the decision. Despite the controversy, Greenwood made a strong start to the season, scoring twice in a 5-1 victory over Brest.
