Mavado’s son, Dantay Brooks, had his murder conviction overturned earlier today. the Court of Appeal overturned the murder conviction of Brooks, son of dancehall veteran David Brooks, professionally known as Mavado. Brooks’ co-accused, Andre Hines, also had his conviction overturned.
In 2021, both Brooks and Hines were sentenced to life in prison for the 2018 murder of Lorenzo Thomas in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew. They were also found guilty of arson and illegal possession of a firearm.
The prosecution alleged that Brooks and Hines, along with five other men, forcibly entered Thomas’s home and fatally shot him. Brooks was 18 at the time of his conviction.
Dancehall star Vybz Kartel expressed support for fellow icon Mavado’s son following the news. Kartel shared a report on the ruling, showing his support by posting a story.
The "Gully Gad" and Kartel have maintained a positive relationship in recent years, with Mavado also showing support when Kartel was freed last year.
