Former Manchester United wunderkind Mason Greenwood is eager to play for Jamaica, according to Reggae Boyz head coach and former United manager Steve McClaren.
The 23-year-old has made an impressive start with Marseille in France, scored eight goals in just 11 Ligue 1 appearances.
While Greenwood reportedly still hopes to add to his lone England cap and play under the incoming England manager Thomas Tuchel, McClaren commented, “I've heard a lot of publicity about and always around Mason Greenwood. I am constantly in touch with Mason, the message is always the same, ‘when the time is right.”
McClaren elaborated on Greenwood’s situation, noting that due to the challenges of recent years, Greenwood wants to find stability in France before making a final decision. “You’ve got to think he’s had a traumatic time the last two years in his contract, and he’s been on loan. He’s been here, he’s been there – the publicity, and I think he just wants to settle in at Marseille and enjoy his football, which he’s doing, and he wants to join the Reggae Boyz. I know that, every time I speak to him, I’ve no reason to doubt that, and the process goes on.”
McClaren provided an update on the situation, suggesting that a switch in international allegiance is already underway. He expressed optimism that Greenwood might be ready to join the team by March. “I’m hoping by March time we will have made progress on everything. As I said, our whole project and process is about World Cup qualification, and that’s still, I know, on the horizon, but it’s still something that we’re thinking about now and planning for in the long term. So Mason, we keep an eye on and keep you posted on that.”
Greenwood’s addition would be a significant boost for Jamaica, offering a level of quality that could greatly enhance their World Cup 2026 qualification prospects.
McClaren, pleased with recent call-ups like Newcastle United's defensive midfielder Isaac Hayden, also touched on the potential return of Ravel Morrison to the squad. “He’s training and playing well in Dubai, scoring and assisting,” said McClaren regarding the former Man Utd prospect, now with Dubai’s second league team, Precision.
