While basketball isn’t as popular in Jamaica as football or athletics, the potential to recruit players of Jamaican heritage could give the national team a serious boost.
Recently, LA Clippers guard Norman Powell committed to representing Jamaica 🇯🇲 in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas Pre-Qualifiers, set for August 8–10, 2025.
The 31-year-old had an impressive season, averaging 21.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game—earning consideration for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award. His addition could be a major asset for the squad.
Phoenix Suns center Nick Richards, another potential addition, also had a strong season. With the possible inclusion of other players of Jamaican descent—such as Josh Minott (Minnesota Timberwolves) and the Thompson twins, Amen (Houston Rockets) and Ausar (Detroit Pistons)—Jamaica’s basketball future could be on the verge of a breakthrough.
Currently ranked 109th in the FIBA World Rankings, Jamaica will face Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the upcoming pre-qualifying round.
Following the Reggae Boyz’s successful recruitment of British-born talents like Michail Antonio, Demarai Gray, Ravel Morrison, and possibly Mason Greenwood, the blueprint for building a stronger national team through diaspora athletes is already in motion. Basketball may be next.
