Chicago-based reggae artist Kazayah has released her first single for 2024, titled "Ready fi di Road." This dynamic track, produced by Jah T, pulsates with an irresistible rhythm, infusing listeners with motivation and a sense of upliftment that compels them to dance.

Kazayah, born Shanelle Mitchell, embodies the vibrant spirit of her Jamaican roots. Her musical journey began in childhood, culminating in collaborations with an Evanston producer that deepened her connection to roots reggae. "I am a first-generation Jamaican-American, but I was deeply immersed in my Jamaican culture from birth because I was blessed with parents who understood the importance of staying close to their roots," she explained.

Expanding on her connection to music, she added, "My parents migrated to America as adults, and I would visit Jamaica almost annually from childhood into adulthood. That’s where my natural love for all things Jamaica, especially the food and music, comes from."

Despite being born to Jamaican parents, music wasn’t something Kazayah was exposed to from an early age. "They were very religious, especially my mom, and didn’t promote listening to reggae or 'secular' music. I grew up in the SDA church and was very active, singing in the choir, a trio, performing solos, and playing instruments. I believe that’s where my love for gospel music and my faith were initially nurtured," she disclosed. "My father, on the other hand, didn’t grow up SDA and was more exposed to and open to a variety of music."

Garnering comparisons to musical legends such as Marcia Griffiths, Lauryn Hill, and Jah 9, Kazayah has graced stages worldwide alongside iconic artists. "My father really sparked my love for soul and Motown music, as well as many other genres. My influences range from Burning Spear, Bob Marley, Dezarie, JC Lodge, Judy Mowatt, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, Kirk Franklin, Acappella, Smokie Norful, Shania Twain—the list is long."

"As an artist, my goal is for my music to reach as many people as possible. More importantly, I hope for the words of my songs and my voice to make a positive impact on the hearts and souls of people who need it or simply for those who just want it," Kazayah expounded.

Reflecting on her musical content, she stated, "I pride myself on the content of my music and the beauty that adults and children can enjoy without guilt. My songs cover themes of love, faith, comfort, and perseverance, reflecting my journey and aiming to encourage those who feel downtrodden or close to giving up."

This year, Kazayah promises some exciting releases, including a special collaboration with a well-known artist coming soon. "I'm excited and look forward to sharing new music with you. I'm also grateful to share the growth in my artistry," the singer conveyed.
