Jamaica's Reggae Boyz advanced to the Concacaf Gold Cup group stage with a 3-0 (4-1 aggregate) win over St. Vincent and the Grenadines at Sabina Park on Tuesday evening.
In their first home match at Sabina Park in Kingston since 2018, the Boyz took the lead in the 27th minute through Jamaica Premier League's current leading scorer Warner Brown, who finished confidently after receiving an assist from Bobby Reid. A late own goal by Andrew Johnson and a stoppage-time strike from winger Renaldo Cephas sealed the victory and ensured Jamaica’s place in the tournament, scheduled for June 14 to July 6.
The game was Steve McClaren’s 10th game in charge as Jamaica's head coach. The English coach said, “We need to educate the players on the playing style — build-up, pressing, etc. There's still a lot to do. We want to implement a style similar to what’s happening in Europe in terms of pressing, transitioning, and build-up play.”
“We’re getting better. The more time we can spend with these players, the better we will get,” he added, noting that both players and staff praised the excellent condition of the pitch at Sabina Park.
