Sean Paul celebrating a dream come true by revives the iconic 'Dave Kelly's Showtime Riddim: "one of the most prolific dancehall riddim"

'Bring It' brings back the 90s iconic riddim

Dancehall superstar Sean Paul revives the iconic Showtime riddim with the release of his new single 'Bring It' under his Dutty Rock Productions label. This follows legendary producer Dave Kelly’s clearance of the riddim earlier this year, marking a significant collaboration between the two.

Dave Kelly reached out and said that I could use one of his rhythms. And, I immediately said, Showtime!,” Sean Paul explained. “I was very happy when he told me I could get a cut of it. This year, a lot of people are revamping some riddims from the past, but we can all agree this is a classic.”

The Showtime Riddim has stood the test of time, recently recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the “25 Riddims That Have Defined Jamaican Music.” Known for producing iconic hits like Shaggy and Rayvon's "Bashment Party" and Spragga Benz’s "We No Like," which defined 1997 and beyond, the riddim continues to resonate with fans around the globe.

In a 2022 interview with Vibe Magazine, Sean Paul expressed his admiration for the Showtime Riddim, describing it as a standout beat he had always wished to voice. Fast forward to 2024, and Sean Paul’s wish has finally come true with the release of "Bring It," a track that pays homage to the golden era of 90s dancehall.

The work of producer/songwriter Dave Kelly has always been on Paul’s radar, making this collaboration particularly significant. “Showtime, to me, is one of the most prolific dancehall riddim. He has probably produced the most number ones in the country,” Sean Paul shared. “My respect for him is very, very immense.”

Taking his turn on the latest trend in the space, the reimagining of vintage dancehall riddims, the platinum recording artiste said there are a few noticeable differences.

“There are a few added things, revamped. I must say, big up to Sukku from Ward 21, News from Money Matters Entertainment, Copper Shaun and my brother Jigzag. All of us kind of came together, worked on it,” he explained. “The keys are a little different. We changed the key and speed so that the riddim is a little bouncer. Every time the people hear it, it will bring a good vibe.”

Sean Paul noted that although this single is his first time working with the notoriously private producer, he wants more.

“This [Bring It] is one of my dreams come true for me in the music business. I would love for me and him to write something together. To say I’m a fan of Dave Kelly is an understatement. He is not always given the due respect… he’s a generational type of guy.”
