Skip Marley revives Maxi Priest’s classic for a new generation
Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Skip Marley returns with his latest single, “Close,” released on Friday, October 25, reimagining Maxi Priest’s dancefloor classic “Close To You.”
The single debuted alongside an official music video directed by Gabriella Kingsley, with the visual premiering on BET Soul and the iconic Paramount Times Square billboards.
Produced by Rykeyz (known for work with Jessie Reyez, Demi Lovato, and Wiz Khalifa), “Close” blends the familiar hook with a slow-burning reggae groove. Skip showcases his versatility, bridging genres and generations with his songwriting and musicianship. The track’s head-nodding beat and evocative verses elevate the instantly recognizable chorus, creating a fresh yet nostalgic sound.
“It’s modern, but it pays homage to Maxi Priest. I loved the idea of bringing this great song to the new generation.” The young Marley shared. “On one hand, I’m reminiscing about a girl. For me, there’s a bigger meaning too. The song hints that I’m back and about to begin another chapter.”
Following his recent sold-out headlining tour across Europe, renowned reggae artist Skip Marley kicks off his next chapter with the single “Close” and hints at more music releases and live shows on the horizon.
