Incarcerated dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel, to go free

The Supreme Court has denied bail to incarcerated dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel (whose real name is Adidja Palmer), Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, and Andre St. John.. This decision follows the Privy Council's overturning of their 2014 murder convictions due to juror misconduct. The Court of Appeal is set to decide on June 10 whether a retrial is warranted.

The habeas corpus application for their release was filed by Kartel's legal team and has been scheduled for further hearings on May 29 and 30. The Supreme Court has also included the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as an interested party, requiring their response to the application . The case is expected to return to the Court of Appeal on June 10 to determine if a retrial is necessary.

The UK Privy Council, in its March 14 ruling, overturned the 2011 murder convictions of Clive 'The Lizard' Williams, citing juror misconduct, and ordered Jamaica's Court of Appeal to decide whether a retrial is necessary for Kartel, Campbell, Cairo Jones, and St. John.

Kartel and his co-accused, who have served more than 12 years in prison, have consistently denied involvement in Williams' death.
