Exclusive: Pioneer comedian and YouTuber reflects on his legacy, returns to vlogging, showcases Jamaican culture through film, and inspires the next generation of creators
Andrew Trabass, returning to vlogging
Andrew Trabass made a name for himself as a comedian through humorous skits on Trabass TV, which he launched in 2009. As a pioneer in comedy and vlogging for Jamaicans, he became the first to appear in that section on YouTube, amassing hundreds of thousands of subscribers to his channel.
"I truly feel like I’m a big influence. Putting in the work over the years has really brought me to where I am now, and I’m still encouraging the younger generation to surpass me in creating content," Trabass shared with Kaboom Magazine.
Since then, Trabass has ventured into the music scene, creating short videos and other projects to expand his creative repertoire. With vlogging gaining popularity on YouTube, he now plans to reignite and evolve his content by returning to vlogging. "Staying original—even though everything in this world has been done before—you still have room to make things your way," he explained.
Talking about his music career, Trabass shared how he balances his creative pursuits. "I’ve been doing music over the years and topping charts. I’ve even been on Billboard before without even trying," he said. "I’ve been doing music for as long as I can remember—I usually create soundtracks for my films. Being a good multitasker helps. One week it’s music, the next week it’s films, and then comedy after that. I always leave room to create. As for being a father, I just have to make time for my baby girl—she’s my world," he elaborated.
Showcasing Jamaican culture and its influence worldwide through his films, Trabass plans to continue this focus in his upcoming projects. He explained, "Just doing more urban films about my culture and highlighted great actors from my country."
While advising young Jamaicans looking to make their mark in the digital space, Trabass said, "Be as original as you can and have consistency in anything you do." As he shares this wisdom, he continues to calculate his next chapter in life.
