Trump Weighs Executive Order to Delay TikTok Ban, Seeks Alternative Solutions

President-elect Donald Trump may issue an executive order to delay the TikTok ban for 60 to 90 days, allowing time for negotiations, according to The Washington Post

Trump plans TikTok ban suspension according to reports

President-elect Donald Trump is considering an executive order once in office to suspend enforcement of the TikTok ban-or-sale law for 60 to 90 days, giving his administration time to negotiate a sale or alternative solution, according to The Washington Post. This legally questionable move aims to provide a brief reprieve for the Chinese-owned app, currently set to be banned nationwide on Sunday.

Trump, with over 14 million followers on TikTok, has shown interest in saving the app, exploring options like urging Congress to repeal the law or directing the attorney general not to enforce it. However, legal experts argue that an executive order cannot override a law passed with bipartisan support.

Despite attempting to ban TikTok during his first term, Trump has since praised it for connecting with young voters and countering rival tech giants. TikTok CEO Xu Ziqiu recently met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in a last-ditch effort to secure the app’s U.S. presence.

ByteDance, valued at $50 billion, has refused to sell TikTok, citing political risks and market competition from platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Some believe the app could become a bargaining chip in U.S.-China trade talks, though this would require high-level negotiations. Meanwhile, TikTok’s U.S. employees face growing uncertainty as the ban deadline approaches.
