Riding the roaring success of his historic Freedom Street concert on New Year's Eve, dancehall kingpin Vybz Kartel is already setting his sights on making it an annual event.
The recent Grammy-nominated deejay, who is set to embark on a packed schedule this month, shared his vision in recent interviews with BET and Grammys over the weekend. He hinted that next year's staging could take place earlier in December and possibly expand into a two-day festival.
Sources close to the matter told Kaboom Magazine that Kartel intends to host another event next year, though no confirmed date or details have been revealed yet.
Following his return to U.S. soil and the release of his first post-prison project, Viking 10th Anniversary Deluxe, Kartel is gearing up for his busiest year yet. His schedule includes multiple Caribbean stops and a European leg where he will headline this summer's Summerjam festival. He is also awaiting reinstatement of his UK visa, which would allow him to headline London’s renowned Wireless Festival.
With plans to perform in the U.S. once his visa is fully restored, December may be the only available window to stage the next Freedom Street event. This was also hinted at by event promoter and Downsound Records CEO, Skatta Burrell, who accompanied Kartel to the 67th Grammy ceremony on Sunday. Burrell has played a key role in Kartel’s team since his release from prison and remains a crucial part of his camp, also contributing to the production of Freedom Street.
