It has not been a promising Olympics for the Jamaican women in the sprint events so far. Following the absence of sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce from the 100m semi-finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Shericka Jackson has also scratched from the 200m.
World champion over 200m, Shericka Jackson, has been nursing an injury she picked up in her final event before the Olympics at the Gyulai István Memorial in Hungary. This injury also forced her to withdraw from the women's 100m in Paris.
Both join double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who also withdrew from the Paris Games.
Yesterday, 19-year-old Tia Clayton carried the hopes of the future for Jamaican sprints with an impressive 10.89s run in her semi-final heat, followed by 11.04s to place 7th in the finals.
Jamaican track star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has shared a statement following her withdrawal from the 100m semis due to injury. “It is difficult for me to find the words to describe the depth of my disappointment,” she wrote in a post on Instagram.
“I know that my supporters share and shoulder this disappointment with me. I am truly blessed to have had the steadfast support of my fans since my Olympic debut in 2008.
“The support of my fans, my country, and the larger community has rooted me in immense gratitude that has sustained me throughout my career. With every step and win, you all have been there for me. My faith has always affirmed my trust in my journey. Thank you for continuing to be with me today and every day.”
